As a Senior Associate in our Energy team, you will play an important leadership role across a range of complex matters. Working closely with partners and clients, you will lead significant aspects of matters, drive strategy, mentor junior lawyers, and contribute to the growth of our client relationships and practice.

To succeed in this role, you will bring:

  • the ability to build trusted, long-term client relationships and deliver commercially focused, strategic advice;
  • demonstrated experience supervising, mentoring and developing junior lawyers;
  • a proactive approach to business development and a genuine interest in building your professional profile and network; and
  • strong matter and project management skills, with the ability to balance legal risk, commercial objectives and client service excellence.

About us

At Baker McKenzie, we are different in the way we think, work and behave. The first local, truly global law firm in Australia, we commenced operations in Sydney in 1964, in Melbourne in 1982 and in Brisbane in 2014. With our breadth of experience in the local market and global connectivity, we are the law firm of choice for Australian and multinational companies. We have 6,500 lawyers globally who work seamlessly together – across practice groups, sectors and markets – to provide our clients with the connected perspectives, integrated solutions and seamless guidance they need to succeed in an increasingly interconnected global market.

Baker McKenzie Australia can offer you access to complex, market-leading matters working with some of the world's best legal minds – people who know the law and who understand business. We have an unrivalled ability to provide training and secondment opportunities across our global network. Locally, we have an inclusive culture of learning, coaching and opportunity where you will work as part of teams on matters that often cross borders. We value people who think ahead and get noticed.

At Baker McKenzie, our flat structure means you will have direct exposure to our clients, responsibility for meaningful involvement across a broad range of matters, and opportunities for progression. You will also regularly work with our extensive network of global colleagues and clients.

Think Opportunity, Think Baker McKenzie!

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Associate to join our growing Energy transactional team in Melbourne or Sydney. This dynamic role offers you the opportunity to run market-leading transactions working with our national Energy practice, reporting directly to Partner, Sarah Birrell.

Sarah heads up the Energy practice in Melbourne and works with clients in the energy, oil and gas, mining, critical minerals and infrastructure sectors, delivering strategic solutions on M&A, joint ventures and other complex transactions. You’ll also collaborate closely with our Sydney-based Partners, including Raymond Lou (Head of our Australian Energy practice), Sean Duffy, and Lucas Tyszkiewicz – leaders in the energy space.

Our practice

Baker McKenzie's Transactional Practice Group is at the forefront of providing commercially astute advice to major Australian and global companies, fund managers, pension funds and sovereign wealth funds. Energy transition is one of the three key pillars for Baker McKenzie globally, and the Australian office has done some of the largest renewables M&A transactions in the last two years.

We’re renowned for our expertise in high-end mergers and acquisitions, and what truly sets us apart is our unmatched global reach. With offices across the world, we offer clients something no other Australian law firm can: a leading local practice seamlessly connected to a fully integrated global platform. This means you’ll work on cross-border deals that make front-page news, alongside some of the most respected legal minds in the industry.

Our team specialises in complex M&A transactions, privatisations, listed public to private transactions, PPPs, structured finance, major infrastructure (including digital and telco infrastructure), energy, resources and utilities. This role offers you the opportunity to work on high profile projects with our industry-leading Australian and international clients – who are driving energy transition through investments in, and the development and operation of, energy and critical minerals projects.
