The Knowledge Lawyer, Pensions - EMEA will work with the Practice Group Leader (PGL) and the Practice Group Business Manager (BM) to support the Pensions Sub‑Practice Group by providing Knowledge services aligned with the Group's strategic direction, vision, and values within a highly matrixed organization.
The role-holder will manage and execute or coordinate legal content projects, training, and knowledge initiatives for the Group in alignment with the Firm’s knowledge strategy. The individual will operate as a Knowledge Management business professional for the PGL and BM, understand the strategic needs of the Group’s lawyers, and coordinate with the appropriate business professionals to deliver effective support.
Main responsibilities:
To make first-class knowledge easily available to lawyers, increase the quality, consistency, cost-effectiveness and/or value of the advice that Baker McKenzie gives its clients, including:
Knowledge and Expertise:
- Precedents: Draft (or supervise associates) develop and (where appropriate) automate the Group's precedents and other legal content
- Current awareness and commercial/industry know-how: Use primary subscriptions, their tools and relevant technology, keep abreast and provide regular updates on key developments impacting the Group; apply an understanding of Key Clients' industries and businesses to all activity, work with other PGs to provide the most holistic legal, commercial and industry knowhow possible
- Lawyer requests: Lead or coordinate training of lawyers on internal and subscription research tools and where appropriate (capacity permitting) respond to ad hoc enquiries from lawyers with on- point and timely answers and/or triage lawyer requests to Group topic leads; develop a reputation as a practice (or supervise Associates) expert on core prioritized areas for central KL support
- Know-how development: Ensure effective collection and input of the Group's know-how into the Firm's global repository of knowledge including global, multi- jurisdictional databases and resources; identify gaps in knowhow and co-ordinate work to fill them, ensuring content development is progressive
- Training: Identify the Group's training needs; meet training needs by helping drive the planning delivery and promotion of (or supervise Associates) training; leverage the Firm’s resources, technology and processes to produce, or coordinate with team lawyers on, training materials and courses efficiently and of high quality
- Client-facing knowledge: Supervise Associates to provide or help coordinate the legal input into client-facing initiatives, as well as client alerts, and where relevant assist or supervise associates with client training and legal content for proposals and other business development resources; identify Group hot topics and write, commission and deliver or coordinate content such as alerts, thought leadership reports and talking points; educate self about Group’s 's Industry Key Clients with assistance from Group BD Manager(s)
Service Orientation:
- Relationships: Promote and identify ways to strengthen the Group's knowledge culture; build relationships throughout the Firm through collaboration, mutual respect and a reputation for competence; advocate and be a positive spokesperson for Knowledge; nurture relationships with trainees and junior lawyers; support diversity and inclusion, CSR and pro bono activities
- Expectations: Share and leverage knowhow and best practices in the office and region where located in addition to the Group, engage and collaborate with KLs and business professionals across the Firm
Work Management:
- Operations and innovation: Proactively seek ways to improve own and team's service and efficiency and contribute to best practices, including focus on the future use and integration of artificial intelligence and legal tech; actively participate in Knowledge projects
- Systems: Support and drive adoption of Knowledge systems; take ownership of delivery and of the quality, accessibility and usability of knowledge content and knowhow contained in systems and platforms, including using where appropriate using latest legal technology and artificial intelligence; schedule meetings and presentations to promote Knowledge systems, where appropriate
- Strategy, alignment and integration: Understand and promote the Group's business and Knowledge plans; structure time and priorities in accordance with the Group's business and Knowledge plans and provide input into them
- Collaboration: Work with for example Technology, Practice Innovation Lawyers and other business professionals to enable and help embed efficient Group use of artificial intelligence and legal technology tools in respect of over knowledge content and know-how
Skills and experience:
- A degree in Law
- Current license to practice law or eligibility for one
- Extensive experience as a practicing lawyer within England and Wales
- Strong knowledge of Pension law
- Good knowledge of English contract law
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills, with the confidence to work in a multi-cultural and multi‑level environment
- Experience working directly with senior stakeholders on strategy and execution
- Excellent time‑management and organizational skills; able to prioritize and meet deadlines
- Proficient in using Microsoft Word and Excel
- Experience in, or willingness to learn document automation, AI tools, and other legal technologies
Part-Time Status: 0.4 FTE
Reports to: EMEA PGL with dotted line to EMEA BM or as to whom they delegate
Travel requirements: Some travel may occasionally be required
